Swim, ride, run – The team smashed it all!

On weekend of 6th August, a team of 18 committed triathletes completed the AJ Bell London Triathlon for Race Against Blood Cancer to raise money for the charity and its ongoing efforts to help save lives.

Known to be the world’s largest triathlon attracting over 13,000 participants and 30,000 spectators, the AJ Bell Triathlon never disappoints. And 2016 was no exception.

With most of the team completing a triathlon for the first time, nerves were high as the London sun started to rise and heat started to soar. But team Race Against Blood Cancer stayed strong!

Offering many different formats and distances, team Race Against Blood Cancer saw various waves of fundraisers depart throughout the day. Despite the heat, everyone dug deep, remained hydrated and completed the respective events and disciplines in a great time, with a smile on their faces, and pride in their hearts.

Race Against Blood Cancer is immensely proud of the great team effort that went into this event. Despite the hard work, sweat and tears, the team managed to raise over £6,000 to help give every blood cancer patient an equal chance of finding a suitable match.

Thank you to all those taking part in the event as well as the spectators who went to cheer the team on. You were all amazing!

We look forward to being back next year. If you would like to get involved for the 2017 event, please get in touch with ben.westwood@raceagainstbloodcancer.com. Our 18 triathletes were exemplary, let’s aim for a team of 40 for 2017!

A few climbs, dramas, and many laughs later, the 3 Peaks Challenge is complete

Ben Westwood, a dedicated fundraiser from Race Against Blood Cancer joined forces with Birmingham Children’s Hospital fundraisers to take on, and smash, the 3 Peaks Challenge in 24h.

On Saturday 16th July at 6AM, the team set out from Shropshire on the arduous challenge of climbing the highest mountains of Scotland, England and Wales in 24 hours, covering an estimated 44 km, with a total ascent of 9800 feet and not to mention the 1109 miles that were covered by the support crew in the mini bus.

Starting off at the bottom of Ben Nevis at 5PM, they had around 5 hours to complete the ascent before heading back down to the van and make their way to peak number two. The weather was not on their side. Winds blowing a gale, heavy rain pouring down and forecast throughout definitely was a challenge. Temperatures also dropped -7 C at the summit on this mid-July date. It seemed like anything but a nice summer’s afternoon for a stroll! Enduring horizontal rain coming at them from all angles and temperatures that seemed to drop with every footstep taken, Ben Nevis was by far their longest and most difficult challenge in the competition due to the conditions.

Despite the negatives, they did come home with a few notable moments which included helping pull up a fellow hiker from a fall half way down a steep bank as she held on for dear life before a few members of the team ran to the rescue. Or, on the way down witnessing one of the mountain rescue team’s quads going off track down a gully with the driver needing to jump off! But, despite the dramas, the team made it in just over 5 hours.

Ben Nevis done, they quickly pushed on through the night with a 6 hour drive to Scafell Pike where dry weather and slightly warmer temperatures awaited them. Scafell Pike was checked off and climbed in just over 3 hours. Besides the very sore legs, serious cramps creeping in and the painfully slow bacon butty van at the bottom that they had to pay a visit to, the trek definitely included less drama.

The team’s third and final peak was Mount Snowden in Wales and was probably the easiest of the three. Wales didn’t disappoint as the sun shun bright and the temperatures a delight. Ditching the hiking boots and donning the trainers, shorts and T-shirts, the team completed the peak in just under 3 hours before doubling it in at a canter over the finish line.

The 3 Peak Challenge in 24 hours was completed!

Massive thanks to the entire team and all the individuals that sponsored and supported us throughout the event. It’s not too late to give generously. Follow the link – https://www.gofundme.com/24ksmqc

Race Against Blood Cancer joins the fun at Shropshire Kids Festival

On April 23rd & 24th the Race Against Blood Cancer team joined the thousands of excited children and parents at Shrewsbury Quarry Park for our first appearance at Shropshire Kids Festival.

The basic yet incredibly worthwhile concept is bringing fun activities for under 14’s into one place and with more than 100 activities to get involved in, the festival did not disappoint. From donkey rides, face painting, to an inflatable Helter Skelter, there was something to keep every child entertained and that bought thousands of families together for a fun filled weekend.

Race Against Blood Cancer pitched up with a huge gazebo with both an energetic and passionate team. Following the family and children theme, the team was made up of volunteers from both London and local Salopians, parents and kids a like.

The team enjoyed the frequent sunny spells and luckily the less frequent showers. Running around the festival speaking to anyone that would listen, raising awareness and signing up the much needed bone marrow and stem cell donors, the team was in full flow.

In working in partnership with the #match4tommy campaign we hoped for a great turn out and we weren’t disappointed! By the end of the two days and an amazing effort by the whole team, we managed to collect 200 new donors! This was an amazing outcome and an event we all thoroughly enjoyed. The atmosphere was buzzing throughout and we are extremely grateful for the opportunity to attend.

A huge thanks goes to out to Beth Heath, Rachel Davy, Emma Davies, along with all of those who came down and helped out. Lastly and most importantly, thank you to all the kind donors we signed up on the day. We hope you continue to share our hopes and dreams of finding the likes of Tommy and every blood cancer patient a lifesaving donor match.

Croud Putting London Agencies to Test in Shrewsbury

The Midlands put London media agencies to the test this weekend as Croud hosted its first donor drive in its Shrewsbury offices on Saturday morning, marking the start of many future partnerships to come with the agency.

Orchestrating the slickest donor drive event to date, the team at Croud set the bar extremely high and impressed our Engagement Team lead who came back to London with a mind full of ideas for future drives.

Croud’s team boasted energy and support towards the cause from the start of the process and went above and beyond to promote it with posts on their site, regular company wide emails and even managed to secure an interview on BBC Shropshire during rush hour in late January.

As the Race Against Blood Cancer team arrived at the media agency’s offices, they were greeted in the designated check-in area where Croud had set up all the registration forms and was selling refreshments and homemade cakes to raise money for the charity. And to keep the spirits high and friendly, they had also set up a table football and Xbox area to entertain children and those waiting to register!

While the drive only lasted 3.5 hours, they managed to collect a fantastic 63 new donors and over £250 which Croud then agreed to match, increasing the total amount raised to over £500.

This was an amazing effort from an amazing team who showed their determination to help us in the fight against blood cancer from day one. The atmosphere throughout the event was buzzing and we would especially like to thank Angela Pin and Emma Davies who organised the event. We would also like to thank Jon, Sharron and Alice Ditchburn, Jed Brookes-Lewis, Kole Ogundipe, Ryan Powell, James Ratheram, Alice Wilkinson, Ed Jones, Gareth, Mazen Hussain, Chris Haines and last but not least 8 year old Mia Davies who helped on the day registering donors and selling refreshments.

2015 might have been a good year, but 2016 is proving to be even greater! Thank you all for your support.

Race Against Blood Cancer at Notting Hill Carnival

Race Against Blood Cancer to team up with ACLT at this year’s Notting Hill Carnival

On August Bank holiday weekend, Race Against Blood Cancer is excited to be supporting the ACLT with volunteers to help drive donor registrations at the Notting Hill Carnival.

Race Against Blood Cancer at Notting Hill Carnival

Known as one of the largest street festivals in the world and the biggest in Europe, the carnival has, since its start in 1966, grown to become a real icon of British culture. Originally calling on the British West Indian community the carnival has now become a key date for people from around the world to celebrate, making it a real hub of mixed cultures, ethnicities and fun.

Amid festive crowds, jerk chicken stalls and music stages, Race Against Blood Cancer will be present at the heart of the carnival from 12pm to 5pm on the corner of Lancaster Road and Ladbroke Grove.

ACLT LogoThis will be Race Against Blood Cancer’s first presence at the carnival and we look forward to supporting ACLT in what will hopefully become an annual presence to increase diversity on the donor register and help save lives.

If you are passionate, outgoing and keen to help on weekend 30th & 31st, please get in touch with alex.morrison@raceagainstbloodcancer.com who will give you more details.

Race Against Blood Cancer launch is a roaring success!

Friday 10th July marked the private launch of Race Against Blood Cancer with the inaugural event a huge success.

96 golfers revelled in the Shropshire sunshine, as they took to the course to enjoy a round of 18 holes against the backdrop of the stunning countryside, with a healthy dose of rivalry and competition evident throughout the day.

Those who stayed on for the evening were not disappointed, as they were joined by close friends and family of those involved with the charity to take the numbers up to 260 on the night. Guests were treated to a 3 course meal and amongst the laughter and positive vibes, was a heartfelt speech from one of the cofounders who talked through the birth of the charity, resulting in one or two tears being shed.

Not to lose sight of the reason they were all there, an in-depth presentation was delivered by TalkSPORT’s Geoff Peters who kindly took a break from his summer holiday, to eloquently deliver a number of key points that truly inspired all those in attendance to take action.

The feedback on the night and since has been incredible with the team overwhelmed with offers of support. Crucially, 84 new donors were registered on the evening to add to the 108 that were signed up at the OMD donor registration drive early that week and many more people having registered via the website since. Additionally, over £12k was raised that will have a big impact on the team’s ability to further raise awareness and sign up new life-saving donors.

A massive thanks to all those that attended the event, along with those who supported from far.

Race Against Blood Cancer gets it down to a ‘tee’ with private launch party at the Shropshire Golf Course

Race Against Blood Cancer gets it down to a ‘tee’ with private launch party!

On Friday 10th July, The Shropshire Golf club will host 100 golfers in the day and 250 guests in the evening, for the private launch of Race Against Blood Cancer.

The event is invitation only and is being attended by close friends and family of the team involved with setting it up. As part of the evening’s entertainment is a DJ, live singer, silent auction and quiz with some great prizes on offer.

The team will also look to use the opportunity to raise awareness of the shortage of stem cell and bone marrow donors from various ethnic groups and to encourage those in attendance to register on the night as a potential donor. A huge thanks to everyone who has helped with the planning of the event, in particular Joe Bates for leading the charge & Matt Lea for organising the golf day.

Please keep a look out for the photos and an update on how it all goes.

Three Peaks Challenge for Race Against Blood Cancer

Three Peaks Challenge for Race Against Blood Cancer

After hearing about the unfortunate diagnosis of someone close, a group of old university friends decided to turn a negative into a positive and set themselves a challenge that would help raise money for Race Against Blood Cancer.

Three Peaks Challenge for Race Against Blood CancerOn a sunny Saturday in May the group set off to take on the Three Peaks in the Yorkshire Dales. The walk would involve climbing up 5000ft, across 24 miles, completing it all within 12 hours. They firstly set-off up the hills of Whernside, followed by Ingleborough and Pen-y-ghent, while taking in the breath-taking views of the valley of the River Ribble and the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

Dozens of jelly sweets, a few local pub stops and minus two toe-nails later, not only did they complete the walk within 10 hours 20 minutes and manage to raise over £2,000 for charity, but they did something they thoroughly enjoyed and discovered themselves a new pastime. They wrapped-up and celebrated later that night with friends and family over a charity BBQ.

The challenge itself was extremely tough but what the group felt in return was truly gratifying and totally worth it. And this is just the beginning of our fight against blood cancer.

18th Annual City of Angles Fun Ride for Race Against Blood Cancer

18th Annual City of Angles Fun Ride for Race Against Blood Cancer

Los Angeles. A city which has come to represent the diverse multi-cultural, ethnic and nationalities of modern America. Against this backdrop there was no more appropriate setting for raising awareness of Blood Cancer amongst ethnic minorities.

18th Annual City of Angles Fun Ride for Race Against Blood CancerAnd so on a typically sunny Sunday in April, 8 riders of varied backgrounds that have come to call LA home took to the streets of Los Angeles as part of the 2015 City of Angels Fun Ride.

On a 35 mile route passing the Jewish Synagogues of La Brea, the Mexican Taquerias East of Downtown and through the bustling streets of Koreatown, a single act of solidarity raised laughs, claps and plenty of cash.

But what use is cash without donors. At the finish line amongst the splendor of the UCLA campus, a support team turned awareness into action with a donor drive, which marks just the beginning of our journey.
